‘They Know His Situation’: A Woman Intervened as Walmart Personnel Restrained a Man With a Disability Outside a Michigan Store

Outside a Walmart in Michigan, a bystander is seen intervening as store personnel physically restrain .a man who bystanders described as having a disability.

The video was captured by bystander Anitra Raspberry outside the Walmart Supercenter in Big Rapids and was reshared on Reddit’s r/BlackPeopleofReddit, where it had more than 15,000 upvotes at the time of publication. The Walmart store shown in the footage is the company’s Supercenter at 21400 Perry Ave. in Big Rapids.

The footage shows several people gathered around a man on the pavement outside the store. At least two men are restraining him while bystanders watch. The woman who walks up to him and intervenes can be heard repeatedly challenging the personnel involved. “They know his situation,” she says. She also points out that the man had been walking away before the confrontation escalated.

At one point, she tells the people involved, “Why keep antagonizing him?” Meanwhile, Raspberry continues recording and saying that she has the encounter on camera.

The confrontation eventually de-escalated as the woman continued to tell the man that she had his back. The man, on the other hand, thanked her loudly and hugged her. The video also captures her criticizing the treatment she witnessed, especially when other people knew the man’s circumstances. However, the Daily Dot could not independently establish why Walmart personnel initially approached the man.
