Reddit Man Shocked That Broke Girlfriend Actually Had $50K in Savings the Whole Time They Were Dating

A man on Reddit shared an account of him having a shocking revelation about his broke girlfriend’s finances. Apparently, she would claim she was broke, until he discovered she’d been secretly saving $50K. And had money the whole time they were together.

According to the story shared by the Reddit user, the couple have been dating for nearly five years. And in that time, they never really brought up money. While the Redditor claims to have an average-paying job that’s stable. 

His girlfriend had been working part-time while studying. However, she eventually landed a full-time job. It wasn’t until a year ago that they began diving into the intricacies of their finances. 

During their time together, the Redditor recalled paying a higher portion of rent, about 70% to be precise. However, since the individual wanted to save money wisely, they slowly began to split things until a fortune left by his dad changed everything.

The Reddit user went on to reveal that his dad had left behind a fortune worth $500,000. Which can go a long way. And for someone who reportedly had not more than $10,000 in savings, it was a huge boost. 

Shortly after claiming his fortune, the couple decided to invest in a home with half of the money. Just before they could submit their application, the girlfriend revealed shocking news. The person recalled, saying, “She actually had $50,000 in savings.”

The reason her boyfriend was alarmed was that he claimed she had made him pay so many times. She’d often say, “I can’t afford this…” and ask him to pay for things. What those things were, the person didn’t specify.

But it could be anything, like groceries or dates, given they were dating and were living together. Shortly after finding out she’d secretly kept 50K in savings, the man decided to confront her about why she hadn’t brought it up before. 

According to the man, she’d been saving that money since she was a teenager. But why cover up having savings? That’s exactly what the man wondered about his girlfriend, whom he claimed to love very much.  

Before fellow users on the Reddit forum responded, the man expressed his feelings and shared an update about whether or not they bought the house. The individual said, “I’m really struggling to get past it, and the relationship feels tainted now…”

The same user added, “Address that your trust is broken and that this is something that you have to seriously consider moving forward.” 

Other Redditors offered sound financial advice and empathized with the person’s girlfriend. While some thought it was a good idea to buy a home with his girlfriend, using his inheritance, others strongly disagreed.
