The 66th Annual Grammy Awards aired tonight and many of music’s brightest stars were on hand to strut their stuff.
The night's first award went to Miley Cyrus for Best Pop Solo Performance for her song “Flowers,” after which she accepted her first-ever Grammy from Mariah Carey.
The star then went on to give what quickly became one of the most talked about performances of the evening, taking to the stage to sing the song that won her said Grammy for the first time ever on live TV.
Taking to the stage, Miley began performing with an infectious energy—giving us full Tina Turner—but she quickly called out the audience members for not singing and dancing along with her, hilariously asking, “Why are you acting like you don't know this song?!”

As the song (and the audience’s energy) picked up toward the end of the performance, during one of the choruses, Miley then seemed to acknowledge her tumultuous five-year-long relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth for the first time publicly when she sang, “I didn’t want to leave you” interrupting herself to add “But I had to!” She then sang, “I didn’t want to fight” interrupting again to add, “But we did!”

Miley and Liam met on the set of their film The Last Song, and their relationship was truly the definition of “on again, off again” having broken up and gotten back together multiple times between 2010 and 2013, before breaking up for several years and getting back together (and getting engaged) in 2016. The couple were married in 2018, but then separated and divorced shortly after in 2019.
Many had already assumed the song was written about Miley’s relationship with Liam, but she appeared to confirm that during her performance with these ad-libs.
She then finished the chorus by changing the lyrics from simply saying “I started to cry, then remembered I can buy myself flowers” to “I started to cry, then remembered I just won my first Grammy!”
Many fans loved the performance, taking to X to share their reactions:

The #GRAMMYs should have ended with that Miley Cyrus performance. Every pose was a picture. The vocals were on point. Her excitement was infectious. OKAY Miley.
