With your boarding pass in one hand and your overhead luggage in the other, you stumble onboard the aircraft while silently checking to see if you have your passport. The flight attendant smiles and says hello, and you return the smile without giving it any thought. But you should probably think again.
In a TikTok video that has already received over 3.5 million views, Ioana Iachim, a member of the cabin crew for low-cost airline Wizz Air, revealed the secret. That cheery greeting at the airport door, in Iachim's opinion, is more than just polite behavior, it's a silent but thoughtful evaluation.
Flight attendants greet boarding passengers "not only out of politeness, but also to check whether or not you are too drunk or sick to fly," according to Iachim. In other words, while you're daydreaming about the beach, they're already assessing you.
The comments section erupted. One user commented, "And I thought they fancied me…" Another said, "I knew I wasn't crazy for thinking they looked at you a bit too much when they say hi!" A third joked, "They always ask me if I want to sit in the exit row, so I must get an A+ during this test."
Seeing someone who's had too much in the airport bar isn't the end of it either. Captain Tomar Awdhesh, an A320 pilot with more than 15 years in commercial aviation, supported Iachim's views in a LinkedIn post.
He explained that flight attendants are "secretly scanning" every passenger who walks through that door. "They quickly scan if someone looks unwell, overly nervous, intoxicated, or acting suspicious," he said.
What most people are unaware of is that they are also clocking those who appear composed, powerful, and competent. According to Captain Awdhesh, the cabin crew intentionally seeks out "able-bodied passengers" upon boarding, individuals who could assist in an emergency (e.g., evacuation or managing an angry passenger in mid-flight).
"If they notice a problem, they can act before takeoff to keep everyone safe," he said.

So that brief period of eye contact isn't just small talk. It's a two-second hello that covers all bases, from health, conduct, and sobriety to possible utility in a crisis.
Most passengers stay unaware of this hidden test. One commenter on TikTok summed up the collective shock best: "I thought it was so they seem approachable!"
They do appear friendly, but that's part of their appeal. The next time a flight attendant smiles warmly at you at the door, remember that both the grin and the unspoken assessment you unintentionally participate in are genuine, whether you like it or not.
